A residential programme of seven days or more. Warm oil therapies, the cleansing treatments in their proper sequence, light organic vegetarian food and long rest, set by your Vaidya and adjusted as the days go on.
Panchakarma means five actions. Pancha is five, karma is actions, and they are the five classical cleansing treatments of Ayurveda.
Three of them are given here. Virechana, therapeutic purgation. Basti, the Ayurvedic enema series. And Nasya, medicated oils through the nasal passages. Vamana, therapeutic emesis, and Raktamokshana, bloodletting, are not given.
Everything unfolds in a sequence of three stages the classical texts call for.

Preparation, the main action, and the re-building phase. Ayurveda treats the order as part of the treatment.
Preparation. A light diet, then Ama Pachana and Agni Deepana, herbs that clear what is undigested and rekindle the digestive fire. Where your Vaidya prescribes it, Snehapana follows: ghee (clarified butter) taken on an empty stomach for several mornings, or herbal preparations where ghee is not suitable. Every preparation is set individually, so yours may look different from the outline here.
The main action. Virechana, the purgation, when what has been loosened is let go. Shodhana Basti (cleansing enema) and Nasya belong to this stage too, and run through the programme.
The re-building phase. It begins the day the purgation is over and continues after you go home. Food returns in stages, from Kanji soup to soft food to solid. At home you hold to the Satvik diet while the body rebuilds, with nourishing food and Rasayana your Vaidya chooses for you at the going-home consultation.
Where Snehapana and Virechana happen is your choice. You can do them at home on a written protocol, or here with us.
7 treatment days · 8 nights · €3,580
For when a longer stay is not possible. Seven days is the shortest complete sequence we give. It fits alongside working life, and it is often taken to maintain wellness rather than deepen it.

The shortest stay we would call a Panchakarma. Ten days lets the cleansing Basti (Ayurvedic enema) series run more than once. And it gives the deeper cleansing therapies room to integrate properly.

A cleanse works through the tissue layers in order, and a two-week programme reaches the deeper tissues a shorter stay cannot. This is where a programme stops being about wellness and becomes a matter of health.

The most complete programme we give. It is the length classical Ayurvedic texts call for, where each stage has the time it needs. Long enough for your Ayurvedic routine to become a habit rather than a plan.

Treatment counts are from the example schedules. Your Vaidya prescribes what your constitution needs, so your own plan and your own figure will differ, and both are confirmed with you before your first treatment.
No two days are quite the same. Your Vaidya places the treatments where they will do most, and moves them as the programme goes on.
What holds steady underneath is the rhythm. Your days here follow Dinacharya, the Ayurvedic daily routine, where rising, eating, treatment and rest are each taken at the hour Ayurveda places them. It is a routine you can keep after you leave, and we will show you how.
Your Vaidya selects from warm oil therapies, herbal stamp treatments, oil streams, steam, and the cleansing treatments themselves. What you receive may change as your body responds.
Light organic vegetarian meals, three a day, cooked fresh to complement the cleansing and re-building your body is doing.
They are served in a separate dining hall, the small quiet room in the same building where you sleep, away from the traffic of the community dining hall.
On the Virechana day, and on the other purgation days, the food is deliberately light: Kanji soup, and a light Kitchari or a soupy dish in the evening.
The kitchen uses no fish, meat or eggs. It does cook with milk (though not in the Panchakarma meals), gluten and some nuts and nut oils, so please tell us about any allergies before you come.
In a Maharishi Vastu room on the MERU campus, inside De Meinweg National Park. Vastu is Ayurveda's architecture, where buildings are oriented and proportioned according to the principles of the laws of Nature.
With a discovery call. The length, and whether you prepare at home or here, are decided with you rather than for you. Twenty minutes on the phone settles it, free of charge.
If you would rather speak to a Vaidya first, to ask whether a Panchakarma suits you at all, you can book an Ayurvedic Consultation on its own, online and in person.
We've compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions to help you find the information you need quickly and easily.
“If you can't find the answer to your question here, please don't hesitate to contact our support team for assistance.”
Panchakarma means five actions, the five classical cleansing treatments of Ayurveda. At the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre at MERU three of them are given: Virechana, therapeutic purgation; Basti, the Ayurvedic enema series; and Nasya, medicated oils through the nasal passages. Vamana and Raktamokshana are not given here. Around those sit warm oil therapies, light organic vegetarian food and long rest, in a sequence set by a Vaidya.
Programmes at MERU run for seven, ten, fourteen or twenty-one treatment days, each with one night more than its treatment days. Seven is the shortest offered, because a cleansing Basti (enema) is always held between two nourishing ones and a proper sequence needs at least that long. Shorter stays are offered as Ayurvedic Experiences instead, and for many guests that is the right amount.
That is decided at a consultation rather than at the point of booking. Panchakarma gives back in proportion to the time and quiet you can give it, so guests who clear the diary get the most from it. If the weeks cannot be cleared just now, a Vaidya will say so and suggest an Ayurvedic Experience instead.
Purvakarma, preparation: a light diet, cleansing herbs, and where prescribed Snehapana, the internal oleation with ghee, or herbal preparations where ghee is not suitable. Pradhanakarma, the main actions: Virechana, the purgation day, together with Basti and Nasya. Paschatkarma, the re-building phase: a graduated return to solid food that begins here the day after the purgation and continues at home, holding to the Satvik diet while the body rebuilds, with Rasayana prescribed personally.
Mostly, no. The purgation day is demanding and is followed by a day of rest. The rest of the programme is warm oil, steam and quiet. What Panchakarma asks of you is discipline rather than endurance, and it asks it at both ends: the preparation before you arrive, and the lighter eating afterwards. Guests are seen by their Vaidya every second day, and the programme is adjusted if anything is harder than it should be.
